About Quark(Alibaba)

Founded in 1999 by Jack Ma, Alibaba Group is a global leader in e-commerce, technology, and cloud computing. Headquartered in Hangzhou, China, it operates world-renowned platforms including Taobao, Tmall, and AliExpress.

Beyond retail, Alibaba has expanded into a massive digital ecosystem encompassing fintech (Ant Group), logistics (Cainiao), and Alibaba Cloud, the world’s third-largest IaaS provider. Today, the company focuses on integrating Artificial Intelligence across its services to drive global trade and digital transformation.

1. Smart Eyewear Strategic Investment Phase (2016)

Alibaba’s entry into the field began with high-profile investments. In February 2016, Alibaba led a $793.5 million Series C funding round for the AR pioneer Magic Leap, with Alibaba Executive Vice Chairman Joe Tsai joining its board (Source: Forbes/Reuters). This marked Alibaba’s early intent to secure a stake in future “spatial computing” and augmented reality interfaces.

2. Ecosystem Integration & R&D

For years, Alibaba focused on software integration. Its research arm, DAMO Academy, developed AR and VR technologies for “Buy+” (VR shopping) and navigation. In early 2024, Alibaba merged its Tmall Genie (smart home) and Quark (AI search) teams to develop dedicated AI hardware (Source: 36Kr).

3. Product Launch: Quark AI Glasses (2025)

In late 2025, Alibaba officially entered the consumer hardware market with the Quark AI Glasses series (Source: Bloomberg/Reuters):

  • Quark S1 (Display Version): Priced at approximately 3,799 yuan ($537), featuring dual monochrome green micro-OLED displays and waveguide optics.
  • Quark G1 (Audio/Camera Version): Priced at 1,899 yuan ($268), designed as a lightweight, display-less wearable.
  • Core Specs: Powered by the Snapdragon AR1 chip and Alibaba’s proprietary Qwen LLM.
  • Unique Features: Deeply integrated with Alipay (QR scanning/payments), Amap (navigation), and Taobao (visual price comparison).

Unlike Meta’s social-focused glasses, Alibaba positions its eyewear as a “life assistant” for productivity and commerce, aiming to capture the next-generation traffic gateway for its digital ecosystem.
